We have been living in our current home for over 20 years but I purchased this book for my husband anyway as he is a big fan of the Carey Brothers. He absolutely loves it from the do it yourself cleaning solutions to the home maintence checklist. So whether you are a first time homeowner or have owned your home for 20 years like us this book is must have.

As the former Editor-in-Chief of the top three magazines for the professional remodeling industry, I can say (with some degree of authority) that “Home Maintenance for Dummies” is the number one reference book that every home owner and apartment dweller needs to keep handy. The insights and pro tips offered by the Carey Brothers are spot-on info-wise and are based on decades of experience and “real” hands-on home repair work. Filled with easy to understand solutions and hundreds of suggestions to keep one’s household running trouble-free, the “book with the yellow cover” will help you avoid having to use the dreaded “yellow pages” once its too late.

This book is a great overview to help the new homeowner be a little more savvy about maintaining your house. It starts out explaining why home maintenance is important, getting to know the house, and putting together a plan.

    Sections include
    – The Energy Envelope (foundation, floors, roofing, siding, windows, doors, insulation)
    – Key Systems: Plumbing and HVAC
    – Inside Home Sweet Home (walls, ceilings, floors, cabinets, appliances, fireplaces, home-safety)
    – Out in the Great Wide Open (walkways, patios/decks, driveways, fences)
    – The Part of Tens (cleaning solutions, maintenance skills you need)

There’s even a handy to-do list that breaks down home maintenance into “musts,” “shoulds,” and “coulds.” Plus a schedule of annual, seasonal, or monthly maintenance.

The book helps me feel more comfortable knowing the basics of home maintenance. Cleaning, caulking, painting, leaks, cracks. It makes you feel more confident to take care of the little things around the house and avoid costly repairs later on.
